What is NSİ ECDIS?
NSİ ECDIS is an ECDIS training simulator developed for Nevvar Salih İşgören Maritime High School in İzmir, and it takes its name from the school. Its interface follows the ECDIS layout widely used in maritime schools, so students prepare for the shipboard system with the same screen layout and menu logic they learn in class. The app is used on a tablet in landscape orientation.
Key features
- ENC charts: real-time Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) cell loading and display
- Route planning: waypoint (WP) entry, route editor, route check and monitoring; RTZ route import
- Navigation calculations: leg bearing, distance to WP, XTE (cross-track error), time to go and ETA
- Display categories: Display Base, Standard and All Other; light characteristics, spot soundings, text
- Colour palettes: day, dusk and night
- Symbol modes: simplified or paper chart symbols, plain or symbolized area boundaries
- Navigation tools: EBL and VRM, safety contour, vector time, North-Up/True Motion
- Target layers: AIS and ARPA target display
- Language: Turkish and English interface
Why a Turkish-made ECDIS simulator?
Maritime high schools and faculties mostly rely on licensed simulators from foreign vendors for ECDIS training; licensing, update and maintenance costs are high, and every additional computer and display requires yet another license. NSİ ECDIS removes this dependency: it is training-focused, has a Turkish interface, can be extended to suit the school's needs, and because it runs on tablets, providing a dedicated station for every student becomes easy.
Use in training
In class, the instructor loads an ENC cell while students plan a route, run the route check, calculate leg bearing and ETA, and practise reading the display with the day and night palettes. Measuring range and bearing with EBL/VRM, setting the safety contour and working with display categories are learned hands-on. It is designed so that the topics in the ECDIS training curriculum can be studied in the classroom without a ship.
Important note
NSİ ECDIS is a training simulator; it is not a type-approved ECDIS device and must not be used for real navigation. Charts and scenarios intended for training purposes are used.
